View: Latest news of Ashrita at Blog category: Self Transcendence

Ashrita has been a student of Sri Chinmoy since the early 1970s. He is also well known for breaking the most Guiness Records. At the last count in October 2005, Ashrita had just completed his 119th Guiness World Record. His latest record involved a pogo stick and dog and can be viewed at the BBC site.

Ashrita has also travelled extensively around the world to break records by famous landmarks. He has set records at the Eiffel tower, the great Pyramids and the Great Wall of China.

Ashrita set his first record in 1979, (this record involved doing 27,000 jumping jacks) and has never looked back since. Ashrita says his inspiration behind breaking world records is his meditation teacher Sri Chinmoy. Sri Chinmoy teaches a philosophy of self transcendence. This is the idea of going beyond our perceived limitations in order to stretch our capacities both physical and spiritual. As Ashrita says:

"...Sri Chinmoy also taught me about his philosophy of self-transcendence, that when you have access to the divine power we all have within us, nothing is impossible. Under my teacher’s guidance, I eventually learned how to incorporate my newfound energy into my spiritual life while pursuing athletic goals, "

One of Ashrita's first athletic achievements was a 24 hour cycle race in New York in the late 1970s. Ashrita suprised himself and many others by completing 405 miles with relatively little training.

This is the only Sri Chinmoy Cycling Team club record I don't have at the moment. It is probably the only record of Ashrita that I will be able to beat! However I have no desire to ride a 24 hour Time trial at the moment. I will when I'm older though.
